A conversation with Õkāreka’s Tūī Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield and Taiaroa Royal.
Join TITAS Executive and Artistic Director Charles Santos for a conversation before the performance with Tai Royal, Õkāreka Dance Company’s Artistic Director, and Tūī Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield, Māori Elder and Cultural Advisor to Õkāreka. Tai and Tūī will share the journey of discovery, history, cultural exploration, and dance that brought Mana Wahine to life. This is a free event. Tickets to the performance are sold separately.
- Tūī Matira Ranapiri-Ransfield is a descendant of Ohomairangi and Mākuratawhiti of the Ngāti Ohomairangi people. She is a highly skilled Māori performing artist, creator, composer, vocalist and tutor. An expert in mau rākau a Matarua, Māori weaponry, she teaches the art of patu (short clubs) throughout Aotearoa, Australia, and in London, UK.
- Taiaroa Royal is one of New Zealand’s most outstanding and versatile dancers and choreographers. He graduated from the New Zealand School of Dance in 1984. Since then, he has worked with the major dance companies in New Zealand, including the Royal New Zealand Ballet; Limbs Dance Company; Douglas Wright Dance Company; Human Garden; Origins; Commotion; Black Grace (of which he was a founding member) and Atamira Dance Company.
